Toad in the hole

Toad in the hole. Versione italiana. Have you ever tasted this typical English recipe? It is a perfect dish for bruch or even for a meal that you want to prepare without too much effort. It is a batter, similar to that used to prepare Yorkshire Pudding, in which sausages are cooked. They emerge from the dough just like toads that look out of the burrows.

It is very simple to prepare and quite quick and above all it requires a few steps. If you want to make it even more delicious, you can serve it with gravy sauce, which goes perfectly with this dish.

Toad in the hole

Ingredients:

  • 180g flour 00
  • 3 eggs
  • 350ml milk
  • 500g sausage
  • 2 Tbsp oil
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 pinch of ground black pepper

Directions:

  1. Start by preheating the oven to 220°C (425°F) in static mode. Pour 2 tablespoons of oil into a glass or ceramic pan and heat it in the oven for a few minutes.
  2. Then add the sausage cut into pieces of about 10cm in length and brown well on all sides.
  3. In the meantime, prepare the batter by blending the eggs in a large bowl and adding first the flour and then the milk, while continuing to whisk. You will need to obtain a smooth and lump-free mixture.
  4. At this point add the salt and pepper, mix well and then pour into the boiling pan, over the sausages.
  5. Put immediately back in the oven and cook for 20-30 minutes, depending on the thickness of the batter. It will need to cook a little longer if you used a smaller pan.
  6. You will notice when it is ready by the fact that the batter is swollen and golden, but not too dark.
  7. Serve hot, perhaps accompanied by a spoonful of gravy sauce, which will make the dish more moist and even more delicious.
